The 14th annual Absa Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK) took place from the 21 to 29 March 2008 in Oudtshoorn. This was the maiden voyage of Brett Pyper, new director of the festival, and all were eager to see how he would build on the solid foundation laid by the previous director, Karen Meiring. She was the festival's director since its inception in 1995. This year's festival was noticeably smaller and less frenetic than those of previous years. The festival has enjoyed a steady growth over the past fourteen years, but ticket sales were lower this year than in previous years. This could be attributed to escalating fuel prices and inflation, but perhaps this innovative festival has merely reached its plateau. Other arts festivals have sprouted like mushrooms countrywide and the KKNK has increasingly gained the image of a 'kuier' (party) rather than 'kultuur' (culture) festival. And yet the fewer festival goers reminded one of the early years of the KKNK, when it attracted a niche market and not necessarily the masses. The festival also remained incident free on the whole, the biggest 'scandal' being a popular soap star getting arrested for drunken driving.
